How to find unutilized O365 services from powershell

Microsoft Office 365 is a comprehensive suite of productivity tools, and many organizations have a subscription to the service. However, despite its popularity, many of its features and services go unused or underutilized. Here are some common examples:

  1. OneDrive for Business: OneDrive is a cloud-based storage solution that allows users to store, access, and collaborate on files from anywhere. However, many organizations still rely on traditional file servers, which can lead to OneDrive going unused.

  2. SharePoint: SharePoint is a powerful collaboration platform that enables teams to work together on projects, documents, and other content. However, many organizations are not using it to its full potential, either due to lack of knowledge or simply not incorporating it into their workflows.

  3. Teams: Teams is a chat-based collaboration platform that brings together various communication and collaboration tools into one place. While it is becoming increasingly popular, many organizations are not taking advantage of its full range of features, such as the ability to host meetings and webinars, access documents, and share screens.

  4. PowerApps: PowerApps is a low-code platform that enables users to build custom apps for their organizations. While it has the potential to streamline many processes and improve productivity, many organizations are not taking advantage of this service.

  5. Stream: Stream is a video platform that allows users to upload, share, and view videos within their organization. While it has the potential to greatly enhance communication and collaboration, many organizations are not using it to its full potential.

By taking the time to understand and utilize these services, organizations can greatly improve their productivity, communication, and collaboration.

 Connect-MsolService

$UnusedServices = Get-MsolSubscribedSku | Where-Object {$_.ConsumedUnits -eq 0}

If ($UnusedServices) {

    Write-Host "Unutilized Office 365 services:"

    Write-Host ""

    $UnusedServices | Select-Object SkuPartNumber, ServiceUnitName, ConsumedUnits | Format-Table

}

Else {

    Write-Host "No unutilized Office 365 services found."

}

This script starts by connecting to the Microsoft Online Services using the Connect-MsolService cmdlet. It then uses the Get-MsolSubscribedSku cmdlet to retrieve a list of all subscribed services in your Microsoft 365 tenant. The Where-Object cmdlet is used to filter the results to only show services where the number of consumed units (as indicated by the ConsumedUnits property) is equal to 0.

Finally, the script checks to see if any unutilized services were found, and if so, it writes the results to the console using the Write-Host cmdlet and formats the output as a table using the Format-Table cmdlet. If no unutilized services were found, the script writes a message to the console indicating that no results were found.
